A Taste of Chester County - Week 1

We hosted our first program in the A Taste of Chester County series.

Wine Tasting was hosted at the Kreutz Creek Winery. Karen Clinefrom the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail talked about the upcoming events happening around the wine trail and Carole Kirkpatrick, owner of Kreutz Creek Winery talked about how she got into the wine tasting business.
Both were wonderful and engaging!

The crowd was diverse, the energy was great, and the wine just kept coming!

The Advocacy Coordinator did a wonderful presentation about our library, and even found a way to tie the library and wine together by noting that there was 24 hour access to librarians on ccls.org that you can use to answer all of your wine tasting questions.

We had 30+ attendees who all left with big smiles and rosy cheeks.
Many called as soon as they got home to RSVP for the other events on the program.

This program was awesome. Even the people who presented said they were nervous about how "successful" this would be, and they were pleasantly surprised to see how great it turned out.

Both presenters expressed an interest in hosting other library related events, and I look forward to seeing what other successful programs we can plan!

Program Review - Internet Safety and Cyberbullying with the CVC

Just presented Internet Safety and Cyberbullying for Parents.

The Crime Victim's Center of Chester County and the Chester County District Attorney's Office came to present the program.

The presenters were extremely knowledgeable and well versed in the different types of bullying and the different web devices that are being used for bullying.

Questions were accepted with open ears and the group was able to create a great dialogue on the information that they wanted to know about.

I would highly recommend this program for any of the libraries. The event is free and the quality of the presentation was of an high caliber.

Program Review - Writing for Effectiveness

The Chester County Library hosted Writing for Effectiveness: Finding & Unbridling The Passion on March 3, 2010. Salvatore Grasso, a self published local author was our host for the evening.

The program had 20 enthusiastic participants from a wide range of backgrounds and age ranges.
Discussion topics included How to create character scenes, building effective factual presentations, and how to better open stories and presentations for effectiveness.

Sal did a wonderful job of engaging everyone in the room, and covering a variety of ideas to ensure each attendee could take something away from the evening.

He presented using notes, which he sometimes relied a bit too much on, but as soon as he looked up and starting engaging the group in a conversation on writing, the dynamic of the presentation changed and everyone participated.

I believe this was one of Sal's first presentations, so I anticipate his next presentations will be better and better as he gets more practice.
This was a great general overview presentation for anyone interested in writing a book, or writing more effective letters and correspondence.

The only room requirement would be tables, since there were writing excercises during the presentation.

Sal presented his program for free, and conducted himself in a professional and engaging manner. I would recommend this program for any library in the system. It would be a great unique addition to your program lineup.

I look forward to working with Sal in the future and creating some programs on more specific writing techniques as sort of a "part 2" to this initial presentation.

Program Review - Solar Made Simple

The Chester County Library in Exton hosted Solar Made Simple on September 22, 2009.
The program was presented by Michael Chambers from Chesapeake Solar, a GroSolar Company.

The 56 participants came prepared with notebooks and questions galore. The presentation had the potential to take a sales-pitch turn, but Mike was really understanding that this was a library and removed anything resembling selling in his PowerPoint before the event.

There was some reference to "I can't talke about that" throughout the presentation. But for the most part, he did stick to information that could be used by all.

Mike even learned some new things from participants. Did you know that a Solar Panel is sized using a Golden Ratio? Or that Germany is trying to develop a way for Solar Panels to collect energy even when it's cloudy?

Our participants really did their research!

For the amount of effort needed by the library (none) this was an extremely successful and stress free event. Mike came prepared with his presentation, a table of information, and a sign that displayed the way solar power works, which we posted outside of the room as a welcome.

The Green Valleys Association came with some flyers for their upcoming Chester County Solar Tour, and gave a little blurb at the end of the program to let participants know they could come.

All in all, the event went great. The people gained tons of new knowledge and information, and the library had people scurrying around, post program, using computers, and looking for books that further would help them with solar knowledge.

Program Description: The program is twofold. The program helps parents of K-12 and College students to best communicate with schools and to best advocate for their child in a way that is non-confrontational where the goal is not to "win" but to work together in the best interest of the child.
The other aspect is to help those who have or may have a learning disabled, gifted, or talented child OR any child to achieve their abilities without ceilings and to help parents do so in a way that is economical and proactive.
It would be fantastic if I could bring my teens and have a second room where parents who can't afford babysitting could have children watched (school age/elementary) even if that meant my teens are in the book areas with the children as a helper.
I want this to be easy for parents - they have enough on their plates!

Free Gaming in Libraries Course via YouTube

Scott Nicholson, associate professor at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, will be teaching a video-based course on the basics of gaming in libraries. Every day during the month of June, participants will be able to view a new video exploring some concept of games or how libraries can integrate games into their programs. The class will cover games appropriate for all age groups in many types of library settings. Throughout the month of June, Scott Nicholson will teach IST 600 Gaming in Libraries in three online spaces, two of which are freely available to anyone:

· The Syracuse University YouTube channel, where video lectures and guest speakers will be posted, and where students enrolled in the class will be required to post weekly video responses. (h ttp://www.youtube.com/syracuse)

· American Library Association (ALA) Connect , a social networking site for the ALA that will host the discussion of students, speakers, librarians, and other participants from the general public. (http://connect.ala.org/forum/10310)

· The iSchool¹s online learning management system, a private space for enrolled students to ask questions and submit their assignments.

Students and other participants in the class can expect to gain a solid understanding of the spectrum of types of games, know how libraries typically use games, and be able to select games for their own libraries based upon the goals of the program and the mission of the library. They will learn how to start a gaming program, how to facilitate the activity, how to assess the program, and how to tie the assessment back to the library¹s mission. Nicholson¹s biggest goal for the course is to bring together students, librarians, gamers, and representatives of the gaming industry for a month-long discussion about the roles that games can play in libraries. The course is being offered by the Syracuse iSchool to its students and students enrolled at partner schools through the Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) Consortium.
The course is being funded by the Kauffman Enitiative Project at Syracuse University.

Chester County Reads 2009 - Kick Off Event

We have scheduled the Chester County Reads Kick-Off Event for February 4, 2009 at the Chester County Library in Exton, PA.

The event will feature:

-A "Tales from the Trail" presentation by Glenn Nelson, sharing over 1,000 miles of hiking experience.

-Displays of backpacking equipment, boots, and other hiking goodies

-a Make Your Own GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) station, where potential hikers can fill a baggie with their own special GORP recipe, the essential hiking snack food

-(Still in the works) Appalachian trail hiker to come and share his exprience on the trail

-and Much Much More!

As the official still photographer of Woodstock, the Academy Award-winning documentary, Barry Z Levine has a treasure trove of more than 300 color photographs, a host of vivid memories, and a wealth of anecdotes to share with Boomer audiences. In an exciting and lively presentation incorporating his exclusive photographs, stills, audio and video clips, in a presentation that can be tailored to fit a variety of time slots, Barry sets the stage for Woodstock, locating the events of the decade leading up to the Festival, and utilizing photos and personal experiences, recounts his interactions with the producers, participants, film crew, and performers.
Following Woodstock, Barry Z Levine moved to Holland where he directed an alternative music radio program. He has lived in Los Angeles, Montreal, New York City and in the Hudson Valley, and has been a free-lance writer/producer for clients in the record and film industries. He had his own video production studio in New York City for many years, and has extensive experience in producing video for theatrical presentations.

His photographs of Jimi Hendrix from Woodstock are in an international traveling exhibition of fine art prints that have been on display in museums and galleries in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Santa Fe, and Beverly Hills. His photographs of Woodstock have been featured in the books “Woodstock Remembered” and “Woodstock 1969: The First Festival”, and have been included in Time, People, Life, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, MoJo, and numerous international periodicals and newspapers.

“The Woodstock Story Book”, a new book of photographs and text, is slated for publication Winter, 2008, and his work will be included in several other new books, videos, and CD sets which will be published to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival, August 2009. Interest in Woodstock is being fanned by a new Ang Lee movie, “Taking Woodstock”, several new books, and records and videos.

Notes: I spoke with Barry on the phone this week, and he sounds really down to earth. He's willing to work with our budget constraints, and I'm thinking we could create a fairly decent event out of his presentation.

I think having 2 or 3 libraries that are close together, teaming up and funding 1 event would work really well. We can have Barry come and present, and do a small mixer afterwards with snacks and drinks, where Barry can chat with the attendees one on one.

We could also charge a small fee to offset the cost.
I really think people could view this as an event they'd be willing to pay for.
We can also look into having a community business sponsor the event if need be.

PALA - Young Adult Programming Session

This week was PALA, and I was able to attend a great session on Young Adult Programming.

Gretchen S. Ipock from Sellers Library in Upper Darby, PA did a wonderful job of spelling out incredibly easy ways to organize events for young adults!

I am attaching a link to her handouts, because it is a phenomenal resource.
She is more than willing to share any of her ideas, and she is open to answering any questions you ask her!

GLLS 2008 - Now it's Grandma's Turn to Wii

This session was presented by Allan M. Kleiman from Old Bridge Public Library in Old Bridge, NJ!

Allan talked about how his library successfully implemented a Wii gaming series in his library for senior citizens.

Using the library's Teen Advisory Board as mentors, the library created a series of sessions for senior citizens to come and learn how to use controllers, play basic games, such as Wii Sports, and created a non-threatening, fun-filled environment for seniors to come and learn some new technology!

The library created 3 learning sessions prior to the actual gaming series, to train Teen Volunteers on how to teach senior citizens to use the Wii. They did things like, role play how they would teach their grandparent's to use the Wii. stressed the importance of going slow and being patient, and prepared the teens for a number of different learning scenarios!

When the gaming series started, teens taught the seniors for 1 hour, and than were "rewarded" with 2 hours of open-play after the event!
This way, kids felt like they weren't just working and leaving, and seniors had a chance to see some of the crazy games that they could eventually play!

By the end of the gaming series, seniors were able to play many Wii sport games, and actually gave Guitar Hero a try!
As this program has continued, Allan said that the seniors are now teaching each other, and the library is looking forward to starting a Wii League that will compete against local assisted living facilities in the area!

Keys to success for this event were:
-Pre-training for teens, as well as hand picking teens that were enthusiastic!
-Having multiple gaming nights instead of just one night. Seniors need more than one session to learn everything and get to a point of playing. They like to know they have a chance at retaining what they learn by playing more than once!
-Plenty of Beverages! Staying hydrated is really important while playing such active games!
-Not making a competition. Allan found that the majority of seniors just wanted to play and support one another. The idea of gaming and competition isn't a strong pull for seniors. Stick to Open-Gaming forums in the beginning!

I LOVE this idea! How great would it be to create an inter-generational event at your library, using the teens you already have!

2008 Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium

This past week, I attended the 2008 GLLS in Chicago, IL.

It was a wonderful 3-day Symposium on how libraries can successfully implement gaming events as well as circulating gaming materials in their libraries.

I left with a ton of new ideas and lots of wonderful resources, including a few books that I've purchased or received for everyone to use!

I also scored the Starter Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, 4th edition and a Starter Edition of Magic, the Gathering. If anyone would like to start a Role Playing Gaming Group in their library, this is a great way to see what it's all about.

Because of all the information that I want to relay to everyone, I will be posting a series of Symposium Themed blogs. This way, i can hopefully break down the info into bite sized pieces that you will actually want to read, instead of the novel that I would inevitably write!

Chester County Reads 2009

Hello all,

As hopefully everyone knows by now, the Chester County Reads program has been postponed to 2009.
Diane Gring who has done an awesome job of planning this event in past years, has passed the torch along to me.

I am in the process of looking at what programs were set up already, and which ones we can still follow through with for the 2009 event.

The programming portion of Chester County Reads will begin in March and will continue through May.

I am meeting with Chester County Parks and Recreation in the coming weeks to get the ball rolling.

They have asked for potential dates and times for each library, so they can get an idea of what schedules they are working with.

I understand that not everyone has scheduled their programs for that late into 2009. But having an idea of how many evening or afternoon programs to plan would be helpful.

Which libraries will they present at: ALL!

Program Note: I contacted a member of the NAPO to do a program on "The First Steps to Getting Organized" to present in conjunction with a "New Year's Resolution" themed program series for January.
This has quickly turned into a bit of a bigger fish, because the actual contact turned my information over the the Marketing Director for the Greater Philadelphia Chapter. She has offered to create a basic program, and work with many different organizers, so that we can provide this program at a minimal cost to any library in Chester County.

If you are unable to afford the entire fee, but would like to have a "New Year's Resolution" program at your library, let me know what you can offer and we'll find the rest.

I have talked in depth with NAPO and they have a clear understanding that this will be a Library geared program and not a NAPO geared program (despite their very NAPO friendly program description)

Programming Tip:
To make this a really exciting event, find a local restaurant or cafe to cross promote with.
Ask them to donate some hors d'oeuvres in exchange for having their name attached to the promotional materials.
We are presenting this program at the Chester County Library in February, and I will be approaching Starbucks for this opportunity.
Adding food and beverage can help you market this event as a "Girl's Night Out!" and makes for a really great evening!
It will also gain exposure in the community without costing advertising dollars!
